101 downloads. I count them one at a time.

Kleos Music shipped on 2 October. It passed 100 installs on 18 October. I found out today, 20 October, because Play Console told me so two days late. Here is what 101 actually feels like.

101

A hundred and one.

Kleos Music went up on Google Play on 2 October. The hundred-and-first person installed it on 18 October. I am writing this on 20 October, which means I spent two days not knowing I had crossed a line I had been staring at for a month.

Play Console is a day behind, and sometimes two

This is the part that annoyed me more than the number did.

I had been opening Play Console every morning since launch, waiting for the install count to tick past 100. On the 18th it read 96. On the 19th it still read 96. Today it reads 101, and the chart tells me the crossing happened two days ago.

So Play Console does not show you today. It shows you what was true yesterday, or the day before, cleaned up and backfilled. Real installs land in the store instantly. Real installs land in your dashboard whenever the pipeline feels like it. If you are refreshing that page to feel something, you are refreshing a phone that is showing you the past.

That is not a bug worth a blog post on its own. What made it worth writing down is what those two days did to me. I told myself the app had stalled at 96, that the launch had fizzled, that I should stop checking. And the whole time, five more people had already installed it.

What 101 is, and what it is not

101 installs is small. I am not going to dress it up as traction, because it is not traction. It is a number I can still read one at a time. I know people who get 101 installs before lunch and never mention it.

But 101 is the first number here that is not a failure. It is the first time a thing I built and shipped to a store, with my name on it, is installed on more phones than I could fill a room with.

I have been on both sides of a small number. When it is going up, one is a milestone. When it is going down, one is a tragedy. The number does not care which. I am putting it here so that the version of me who only writes when it is going up has to write it down too.

The part I did not expect to feel

The app is free. The app has no ads, no subscriptions, no account. There is no revenue attached to any of these 101 phones, and there will not be. So the only thing 101 buys me is proof that a stranger, somewhere, found a local music player, decided it was worth a download, and did not think it was a scam.

That last part matters to me more than it should. I get emails from people who think I am a lawyer, or a subcontractor, or an inheritance. I have learned that being found and being trusted are two different problems. Every one of those 101 is a tiny vote that the second one is possible.

I actually shipped what I promised

In the last post I said the fix was the setup step — that the app asked too much before it had earned the right to ask, and that the next update would automate and simplify it so people got to their music faster. I said I would not call it a fix until I saw it in the numbers.

The update is out. Setup no longer makes you point the app at your library and wait while it hunts down files by hand; it finds them, and it gets you to a playable library with fewer decisions in the way. I wrote the promise down in public, so here is the receipt: it is published, and everyone installing Kleos Music today gets the shorter path, not the old one.

I also went back and did the other half of the job, the half that was not in the last post. I changed the icon and the screenshots on the Play Store listing. If the store was failing to turn a glance into an install — and I said in that post I could not tell whether it was the store or the setup — then the listing was the first thing to fix and I had been ignoring it. New icon, new screenshots, same app. That is not a growth tactic, it is just removing a reason to say no.

What I am not going to do is claim it worked. I said that last time and I mean it. 101 downloads is not a retention number. The seven-day cohort has not lived long enough to say anything, and the people installing now are installing a version I can finally measure against the one I complained about.

What I am going to do about it

Not much, and on purpose.

I am not going to celebrate a number that a day-two competitor shrugs at. I am not going to buy a hundred more installs to make the next post sound better. I am going to keep shipping, keep watching the only number that actually tells me whether the app works — whether people who install it still open it a week later — and write again when there is something real to say.

Two months ago I wrote that I did not know whether Kleos Music was failing to be found, failing to be used, or failing to be wanted. 101 downloads does not answer that. It only tells me I am still allowed to keep asking.

The next number

I will check Play Console tomorrow and it will probably still say 101, because it is always a day behind. I have made peace with that.

But somewhere out there the real number is already 102, or 110, or whatever it is, and I will not know until the dashboard catches up. That is fine. The store is the thing that is slow. The thing I am building is not.
